Benefits team of the year

Engine Group
Engine Group
(Entered by Thomsons Online Benefits)

Brenda Boateng, HR operations manager and Linda Goddard, head of HR, The Engine Group

This award celebrates how an in-house benefits team worked together to deliver benefits that met its organisation’s HR and business strategies. The judges were impressed with how Engine Group’s benefits team - Helen Alton, group head of HR, Linda Goddard, HR business partner and Brenda Boateng, benefits manager - dealt with the challenge of building a strong, unified HR strategy in order to successfully bring together 11 companies. This included: Harmonising the benefits offering across all brands, mitigating the risk of equal-pay disputes; developing communications for a very diverse workforce; offering relevant benefits to engage the workforce; measured by engagement, increased retention, reduced sickness/absenteeism and reduced benefits' administration costs. The team achieved all this and more in just seven months.

The judges said: “This is a robust team based on what they had to do. Tenacious. Short time frames for acquisition, and in a small team this is commendable. Good story behind it too. It used benefits as a way of bringing cultures together, with great results.”

The winner said: “We had 11 different companies with legacy terms and conditions that had to merge into one. We came up with an overall benefits package that represented the whole group and have diverse demographics. It is a good mix to manage benefits for. “Everyone is an expert in their field and they all win awards, HR is now up there with them.”
