Best employee share schemes

Royal Mail
Royal Mail Free Shares and Save As You Earn
(Entered by Equiniti)

Ian Dockerill, employee shares manager at Royal Mail

For this award, the judges were looking for an employer that has implemented a successful strategy that has made HM Revenue and Customs-approved all-employee share schemes an effective benefit in their organisation. The judges were impressed by the way in which Royal Mail went from a standing start and really hit the ground running with the launch of a share incentive plan offering free share and a sharesave scheme following its privatisation. To engage as many of its 145,000 employees as possible, the organisation used a wide range of communications, including its TV channel, intranet and extranet, monthly newspaper, online live chat, Freephone helpline and face-to-face briefings.

The judges said: “The scale of its strategy, which spanned its entire workforce, and its results are commendable. Its communications approach is great, too.”

The winner said: “We had great engagement among employees and there was a great sense of pride around being shareholders in the company which generated enthusiasm particularly for the save-as-you-earn scheme where they had to contribute. It was a great effort by everyone in the communications team to deliver this. “The award gives us recognition of the great effort for what everybody has done in a short space of time and the support from advisors and administrators has been excellent.”
