(Entered by Buck Consultants at Xerox)

Matthew Wherry, director of property and workplace, EE

This award recognises employers that have made a concerted effort to tackle employee stress and mental health resilience in the workplace. In a strong category, the judges were impressed with how EE tackled mental health issues, after identifying these as a major health risk within the business. It piloted a comprehensive programme of initiatives to support mental wellbeing in its worst-performing customer service centre, achieving major improvements within just six months.

The judges said: “I’ve never seen a call centre do this. This model could go forward. I admire the organisation for taking the initiative to get to the bottom of what is going on and transform the workforce.”

The winner said: “We always spend a significant amount of time getting to know staff as individuals, which helps us understand what they need. We use coordinated approaches as we mostly have staff in call centres. “We have a dedicated occupational health nurse who is really great. It’s been so effective.”
