Marston's Inns and Taverns
Marston's Smile Scratchcard Incentive

Jenny Williams, resourcing manager at Marston’s – Marston’s Inns and Taverns

The judges were looking for a motivation strategy that successfully used incentives or motivational reward to help drive employee performance, engagement or retention. Linking recognition with rewarding great customer service, instantly, was a key factor for Marston’s when designing a recognition scheme. Its scratchcard incentive scheme, offering a range of prizes for staff, achieved just this. To further celebrate employees’ success, winners are encouraged to send selfies of themselves to head office for inclusion in weekly newsletter and on the organisation’s careers Facebook page. Since its launch, Marston’s has built on the success of the scheme by adapting it for a Christmas incentive programme.

The judges said: “Simple, effective and instantaneous. Relevant, clear, fun, and clever. There is logic behind what it did. It did something different in that industry to push the agenda on.”

The winner said: “It is great recognition of what we do for all of our employees over the country. The scratchcards we have put in place allow everyone, no matter where they are, in our pubs to be recognised and rewarded for their great customer service. “It has helped make everyone feel highly appreciated within any role from the cleaners to the assistant manager, it makes employees feel whatever level you are in that can get recognised for the part they play within Marston’s. “This award is massive, and it is a great way to be able to show prospective employees why they should want to join Marston’s.”
